Dear Fellow Innovator,

Can you do without Persuasion? Sure!

  1. You can do without it whenever you have absolute control of the situation.;
  2. When there are no others in play.;
  3. When there is only one solution.

…in all other cases, when you want someone to do - freely - something for you,

if you offer solid arguments and clearly define your conditions…
you will get their immediate support…

Eh… no… Unfortunately it doesn't work like that, not even between lovers.

What is Persuasion?

Persuasion is a process in which you try to entice others to follow you… with sweetness.

Sweetness is inside the word itself: "suavus" is a word of Sanskrit origin that means "Sweet".

To "persuade" means to make you do something through sweetness.

To attract others, rather than to push them.
To use Sweetness instead of Force. Especially the force of your reasoning.

Offering solid arguments, clear logic and tight numbers is counterproductive,
because they highlight the Strength of our arguments.
And we do not want to use Strength. We want to use Sweetness.

Even marking our position is counterproductive.
Because it is ours - of us - and as such it is an identity and therefore non-negotiable.
It is a brutal act of force.

It is better then to establish a Common Ground.

Make it clear that we are willing to share, to negotiate, to compromise;
that the space between us and them belongs to both;
that there are things we have in common that are independent of the current moment;
that we have common interests, values and origins;
that ultimately we belong to the same Tribe.

All those "arguments" that we bring,
in reality can be taken as good.
We can see them later. "If you want".

Because we are credible.

We are not the ones saying it. Other people say that about us.
They say we are great experts on the subject.
They say we give great suggestions and advice,
we have better information.
And everyone who has followed our advice has had a great time.
There are many of them.
Maybe right now it is not clear why they followed our advice.
But they did.
And they had a great time.

And then, let's face it, when we put forward our arguments,
we expect people to listen to our story.

How boring. How deadly boring.
"Who they think they are" is the least that goes through the minds of those we have to convince.

If instead we tell their story,

we show how ultimately there is nothing new for them;
that certain decisions to "do" - they - have already made in the past - by themselves -
and based on much more solid arguments, values, ideals than ours:
their arguments, their values, their ideals……

In fact, if you look closely, they even promised themselves that in situations like that,
they would never let the opportunity slip away again.
In the past they had bitterly regretted it.

And if they don't remember: it's better to remind them,
telling them what will happen in the future
if they don't do as they did before…
